The prevalence of overweight among children has increased by 50% from 1980 to 2013, and in 2013, 22% of children in the developed world were mentioned as being overweight. In the developing world, it has been observed that there is a 13% increase in female children.
Researchers have noted that the prevalence of obesity among children is particularly prevalent in low- and middle-income countries.
Researchers have pointed out that obesity is a risk factor for asthma & diabetes as well as cancer. The study also noted that 50% or 671 million of the world's obese people are found in only 10 countries: the United States, China, India, Russia, Brazil, Mexico, Egypt, Germany, Pakistan, and Indonesia.
According to the Institute's director, Dr. Christofrey Murray, the fact that obesity can affect people of all ages and high levels of poverty has warned that in the last three decades, not a single country has been able to achieve success in reducing obesity.
