Benefits of Breast Feeding


Newborns need to be exclusively breast fed for the first six months of their life. That meant with no other food or drink. Complementary feeding should begin after six months but breast feeding should continue for at least up to two years. 
Breast milk is quite the ideal food for the newborn. Its contains perfectly balanced amounts of carbohydrates, fat, protein, minerals and vitamins. 
Breast feeding has the following advantages for the newborn
  • Easily digested and doesn't burden the infant's juvenile digestive system: The contents of the breast milk are natural and so easy for the newborn’s digestive system to handle and this makes it preferable. 
  • Free from any sort of contamination and spoilage: the problem with feeding newborns is fear of contamination and this problem could be solved by feeding the breast milk exclusively for six months as recommendation of world health organization.
  • Protects from common diarrheal diseases and lung infections: The antibodies in the breast milk protects the newborn from certain infection. 
  • Prevents allergies and childhood asthma: The breast milk also have immune modulator proteins in it which will avoid development of immunity problems.
  • Promotes healthy bone growth
  • Essential for development of the brain and nervous system
  • Helps boost the immune system
  • Reduces risks of cardiovascular and Type 2 diabetes mellitus
In addition to the baby, breastfeeding also has a lot of benefits for the mother as well. Some of these are
  • Decreases the risk of postpartum hemorrhage.
  • Strengthens the bond between the mother and the infant.
  • Decreases the risk of getting breast cancer
  • Helps the mother lose some of the weight she gained during pregnancy.
  • Prevents bone thinning.
